By combining the powers of AWS CodeDeploy and Bitbucket Pipelines, we’ll show you how to make continuous integration and deployment a piece of cake.
This guide will be your trusty companion as we walk you through setting up a strong deployment system. We’ll help you blend AWS and Bitbucket seamlessly to make your development process smoother and more efficient than ever before.
In this tutorial, I’ll be using ASP.NET Core Project to do CI/CD, please adjust accordingly to your needs. You can get the tutorial repository from <a href="https://github.com/wisuja/ASP.NET-CORE-CI-CD-Tutorial-Project">here</a>.
<h3>Part 1: AWS Setup</h3>
<h4>1.1 Create IAM Group</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the IAM console at <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/">https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/</a>.</li>
<li>In the navigation pane, click User Groups and then click Create New Group.</li>
<li>In the Group Name box, type the group's name (bit_CodeDeployRole).</li>
<li>In the list of policies, select the check box for Policy: * AmazonS3FullAccess * AWSCodeDeployFullAccess
</li>
<li>Click Create Group.</li>
</ol>
<h4>1.2 Create IAM User</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the IAM console at <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/">https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/</a>.</li>
<li>In the navigation pane, click Users and then click Add User.</li>
<li>Type the user name (CodeDeployUser) for the new user.</li>
<li>Don’t tick “Provide user access to the AWS Management Console”.</li>
<li>On the Set permissions page, select Add user to group for permission options.</li>
<li>Choose the group that you’ve created in the previous step (bit_CodeDeployRole).</li>
</ol>
<h4>1.2.1 Generate Access Keys</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the IAM console at <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/">https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/</a>.</li>
<li>In the navigation pane, click Users.</li>
<li>Click on the username that you want to create access keys for.</li>
<li>Click on the Security Credentials tab.</li>
<li>Under Access Keys, click Create Access keys
</li>
<li>Select the use case, fill in the description, and click Create access key
</li>
<li>Click Download .csv file to save your access key.</li>
</ol>
<blockquote>You cannot view the access keys after you leave this page.</blockquote>
<h4>1.3 Configure IAM Role</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the IAM console at <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/">https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/</a>.</li>
<li>In the navigation pane, click Roles and then click Create Role.</li>
<li>Choose AWS service for Trusted entity type.</li>
<li>Choose EC2 for the use case.</li>
<li>Click Next.</li>
<li>In the list of policies, select the check box for Policy: * AmazonS3FullAccess * AWSCodeDeployRole * AmazonEC2FullAccess * AmazonSSMFullAccess
</li>
<li>Enter role name (AWSCodeDeployRole).</li>
<li>Click Create Role.</li>
<li>On the Roles page, click on the role that you just created.</li>
<li>Click the Trust Relationship tab.</li>
<li>Click Edit Trust Policy.</li>
<li>Click Add Principal, choose AWS service, and fill codedeploy.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com for ARN (Change region accordingly)</li>
<li>Click Save.</li>
</ol>
<h4>2.1 Create an AWS S3 Bucket</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the Amazon S3 console at <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/s3/">https://console.aws.amazon.com/s3/</a>.</li>
<li>Click Create Bucket.</li>
<li>Type a unique name for your new bucket in the Bucket name field. Ex: bitbucket-codedeploy-deployment.</li>
<li>For Region, choose Asia Pacific (Singapore) ap-southeast-1 as the region where you want the bucket to reside.</li>
<li>Choose ACLs Enabled, and Bucket Owner preferred as the Bucket option.</li>
<li>Click Create Bucket.</li>
</ol>
<h4>3.1 Set Up an AWS EC2 Instance</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the Amazon EC2 console at <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/s3/ec2">https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/</a>.</li>
<li>Click Launch Instance.</li>
<li>Fill in the name for EC2 Instance. Ex: CodeDeployDirect</li>
<li>Choose the required OS Images. I’m using Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Base as I’m trying this.</li>
<li>Click Create a new key pair if you don’t have any key pair. Remember to save the .pem file, you’ll need to access this instance.</li>
<li>Under Network Settings, tick Allow RDP Traffic from Anywhere, Allow HTTP Traffic from Anywhere, Allow HTTPS Traffic from Anywhere.</li>
<li>Under Advanced Options, choose the role that we’ve created for this (AWSCodeDeployRole) for the IAM Instance Profile.</li>
<li>Click Launch Instance.</li>
</ol>
<h4>3.1.1 Connect to Instance</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the Amazon EC2 console at <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/s3/ec2">https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/</a>.</li>
<li>In the navigation pane, choose Instances.</li>
<li>Click on the instance that you just created.</li>
<li>Click Connect.</li>
<li>Click the RDP Client tab. Pick Connect using the RDP client. Download the Remote Desktop Client file.</li>
<li>Click Get Password. You’ll get prompted for the key pair .pem file that we’ve done before.</li>
<li>Connect to the instance using the RDP Client file.</li>
</ol>
<h4>3.1.2 Install IIS</h4>
<ol>
<li>Open up Server Manager.</li>
<li>In the navigation bar, click Add Roles or Features.</li>
<li>Tick Role-based or feature-based installation.</li>
<li>For Server selection, just choose the available server.</li>
<li>In the Server Roles, tick the following features: * Web Server (IIS) * Windows Deployment Services</li>
<li>In the Features, tick .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.8.</li>
<li>Then just click Next, and let it install.</li>
<li>If you encounter errors, most probably you’ll need to install <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/aspnet/core/host-and-deploy/iis/hosting-bundle?view=aspnetcore-7.0">NET Core Hosting Bundle</a> first.</li>
</ol>
<h4>3.1.3 Install System Manager Agent</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open this <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/systems-manager/fleet-manager/dhmc">https://console.aws.amazon.com/systems-manager/fleet-manager/dhmc</a>.</li>
<li>
Enable Default Host Management Configuration.</li>
<li>Choose the AWSSystemsManagerDefaultEC2InstanceManagementRole role (create it if you don’t have one).</li>
<li>This will allow our instances to show up in the Fleet Manager as managed nodes. You should be able to see your instance showed up in <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/systems-manager/fleet-manager">Fleet Manager</a>.</li>
<li>Connect to the instance.</li>
<li>Install SSM Agent. Follow this <a href="https://docs.aws.amazon.com/systems-manager/latest/userguide/sysman-install-win.html">instructions</a>.</li>
<li>Run these commands on Powershell.</li>
</ol>

<h4>3.1.4 Install CodeDeploy Agent</h4>

<li>Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open this <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/systems-manager/distributor">https://console.aws.amazon.com/systems-manager/distributor</a>
</li>
<li>Choose AWSCodeDeployAgent and click Install one time.</li>
<li>Use default options, except Target Selection. Chooses instances manually, you should be able to choose your instance.</li>
<li>Click Run.</li>
<li>Verify that the service is running on the instance by running this command.</li>
</ol>

<h4>4.1 Create an AWS CodeDeploy Application</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the CodeDeploy Application console at <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/codesuite/codedeploy/applications">https://console.aws.amazon.com/codesuite/codedeploy/applications</a>.</li>
<li>Click Create Application.</li>
<li>Fill in the Application Name (e.g.: directcodedeploy) and choose EC2/On-premises as the Compute Platform.</li>
<li>Under Deployment Groups, click Create Deployment Group.</li>
<li>Fill necessary fields: * Deployment Group: DG1 (Anything) * Service Role: AWSCodeDeployRole * Deployment Type: In-place * Environment Configuration: - Tick Amazon EC2 instances - Fill in the Name for Key - Choose the instance name in the Value field. Ex: CodeDeployDirect - Should show 1 matching instance. * Deployment Settings: CodeDeployDefault.OneAtATime * Load Balancer: Disabled
</li>
<li>Click Create Deployment Group.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Part 2: Bitbucket Configuration</h3>
<h4>1. Enable Pipelines</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the Bitbucket and navigate to your repository.</li>
<li>On the sidebar, navigate to Repository Settings.</li>
<li>Under the Pipelines section, click Settings.</li>
<li>Enable Pipelines.</li>
</ol>
<h4>2. Create bitbucket-pipelines.yml in the root folder of the project</h4>
The example below is for the ASP NET Core 6 Web Application. Please update accordingly.

<h4>3. Create appspec.yml, before-iis-install-stop.bat, and after-iis-install-start.bat in the root folder of the project</h4>
appspec.yml is to tell AWS CodeDeploy what to do in the deployment process. before-iis-install-stop.bat will stop IIS before overwriting the files to prevent IIS from still accessing the web files. after-iis-install-start.bat will start IIS after copying the web files.
<h4>4. Add Repository Variables</h4>
<ol>
<li>Sign in to the Bitbucket and navigate to your repository.</li>
<li>On the sidebar, navigate to Repository Settings.</li>
<li>Under the Pipelines section, click Repository Variables.</li>
<li>These are required variables in the bitbucket-pipelines.yml: * AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID * AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY * AWS_DEFAULT_REGION * S3_BUCKET * APPLICATION_NAME * DEPLOYMENT_GROUP</li>

I’m sure you’ve heard one of these terms that I spoke earlier. (Except you are not following the news at all. Good for you then 🙌)
Lemme try to tell you what does these new terms mean.
Minimalism is an ideology that values keeping important things in your life and ditching the rest. It was popularized by The Minimalist and Marie Kondo in her “Konmari” method. (You know, the “Sparking Joy” one, yep that one 😏)
Hustle Culture as its’ name implies, a culture that pushes hard work, pushing yourself beyond your limits to achieve capitalist goals, such as wealth, prosperity, and success as fast as possible.
This was popularized by Gary Vaynerchuk or as known as GaryVee, an entrepreneur, social media influencer, and also a writer.
GaryVee is a hardcore hustler that likes to work a lot of hours. He has several businesses, and multiple social media platforms, which he published contents daily.
If you have someone that screaming “HUSTLE! HUSTLE! HUSTLE!”, that’s probably GaryVee is coming for you. (I’m joking okay)
And then the Maximalism, it’s the opposite of Minimalism, an ideology that sees beauty of excess in life. This came from the reaction of the bunch of Minimalism contents out there.
Phew, I’ve covered the quick background of each term.
The question is,
<h4>Where does it all goes?</h4>
Not only Minimalism, Hustle Culture, Maximalism, but also all the new terms that are popping out of nowhere these few years back.
First of all, there’s nothing wrong on sticking with the philosophy if it’s applicable in your life and it’s working. The annoying part is, people like to force their choice of philosophy to other person.
Second of all, it’s okay to not following each new trends that’s popularized by influencers.
<blockquote>You do you.</blockquote>
The reason that these trends has come to an end, it’s because people are realizing that it’s just a “trend”, and it’s not for them. People are moving on to the next shiny thing.
So, the new trends will keep popping out, that’s for sure.
It’s the matter of you, the one that decides is this suitable for you.
I think different person has a different way of living too.
<h4>One thing that I like to highlight is,</h4>
<blockquote>Everybody needs to keep improving their own life. That would be a great foundation to achieve a better life.</blockquote>

Minimalism, Hustle Culture, where does it all goes?

Buying stocks? or even Crypto?
Start a business?
Well, yeah maybe. I said maybe because even if you followed their paths, it does not mean you will get what they got as well.
Then, what’s the point of this post? Imma leaves.
WAIT! I promised you that I will tell you the sure way to become wealthy (not rich).
Okay, good? Let’s start.
<h3>1. Check your Financial Health</h3>
If you want to grow your money faster, you’ll need to know your current financial health.
<ul>
<li>Do you have an income? (You need to have an income to grow money, or else what to grow?)</li>
<li>Do you have any debts? (Preferably don’t have any debts, but we don’t know everyone’s situation right?)</li>
<li>Is it higher than your income? (Well, if it’s higher, then it means you cannot pay your own debt.)</li>
<li>Do you save every month? (It’s okay if it’s not that much, 10$ is better than none)</li>
</ul>
These are a few questions you need to ask yourself and answer honestly. Do all the calculations, even if it’s scary.
If you pass all the questions, congrats!
At least, you can take care of your own ass.
<h3>2. Track and allocate.</h3>
Second of all, do you track your expenses? Well if you don’t, I suggest you do so.
By tracking your expenses, you will know how much you spent each month on average.
<blockquote>But, I’m forgetful, how can I track every single expense.</blockquote>
Well, maybe you can go the second route. Allocate your monthly budgeting.
There are two routes to choose from:
<ul><li>Lazy way:</li></ul>
If you hate doing tedious things like spreadsheets and you have two debit cards, you can allocate a monthly allowance on one card, and use the other one for savings.
It’s easier this way, and it allows you to spend whatever you want as long as you still got the money on the card. Keep in mind to never transfer more money from the savings card.
<ul><li>Nice way:</li></ul>
If you are a spreadsheet guru, then I highly recommend you to use spreadsheets on creating monthly budgeting. It’s easier to track and more flexible.
Either way, if you track and allocate, then you are good to go!
<h3>3. Invest</h3>
You need to complete previous the two steps before going to the third step.
Now we are talking about the real deal here.
Why do we need to invest?
Is it even safe?
Will we go bankrupt?
We need to invest because savings is not helping us on growing money. Period.
Have you ever noticed how things are getting more expensive each year? That’s called inflation.
In order to beat inflation, we need to invest and take advantage of compounding interest.
Now, what is compounding interest? Reinvesting the result of our investment to create more profits.

<ul><li>Build your emergency funds</li></ul>
What I mean by emergency funds is money that are used in case of unexpected expenses (E.g. hospital costs, you get fired, vehicle reparation, etc).
If you haven’t done the second step, which is Track and Allocate, you won’t know how much emergency funds you need to have.
The rule of thumb is six to twelve times your monthly expenses.
If you have a family, I suggest going twelve times.
So that means even if you get fired, at least you’ll be able to live for 12 months.
<ul><li>Get an insurance</li></ul>
People will be thankful for insurance that they got only after they got into a problem. Some insurances will cover up to 100% of the costs.
Please consider getting it if you don’t have one. Better be safe than be sorry.
<ul><li>Use only cold cash</li></ul>
Cold cash? What is that?
Cold cash is money that is ready to use.
Money that is idling in the bank.
You wouldn’t want to risk your meal allowance for something uncertain.
After you’ve done these points, at least you have a safety net to catch you even if you lost all your money.
You need to remember that investing by no means is a sure get rich quick tool. It’s uncertain like how we cannot predict the future.
There are few investing instruments in the world ranging from low profit but stable investments, or high-risk high-return investments.
I suggest that if you are a beginner, learn as much as you can about an instrument that you are interested to buy.
In that way, at least you understand what you buy. Be a smart buyer, don’t be a gambler.
These are a few instruments that I knew:

<li>Mutual Funds</li>
<li>Obligation</li>
<li>Stocks</li>
<li>Forex (Foreign Exchange)</li>
<li>Cryptocurrencies</li>
</ul>
<h3>Final Notes</h3>
These are steps that will help you get wealthier in the long run.

I believe that everybody who’s reading this has followed or seen a tutorial to do something. When you are doing so, be careful of “Tutorial Hell”.
<blockquote>What the hell is “Tutorial Hell” you asked?</blockquote>
It is a stage where a beginner tends to depend on tutorials to do things, even simple tasks. So, they will chain a tutorial to another tutorial whenever they want to do something.
<h4>Is it bad?</h4>
Umm, not really. But, if you’re in this “Tutorial Hell”, you’ll never make something magnificent or sellable stuff, because all you do is copying other people’s work.
In this era, where you can basically obtain any kinds of information you want. Absolutely, you can find tutorials for everything.
Even, you can find tutorials for breathing! Absurd? Yes. Bad? No.
It just what it is now, people put every kind of information on the internet.
<h4>Then, why we fell into “Tutorial Hell”?</h4>
Because we feel overwhelmed to do something that is unknown to us. By following a tutorial, we get this feeling of comfort in mind that we will accomplish something, and a tutorial is risk-free.
What I meant by risk-free is you don’t have to go through stress to fix stuff. It’s all there for you to follow.
Also, when we finished a tutorial, we get a sense of progression. But in the end, if you only informed how to do something, but never get your hands dirty, how the hell are you gonna master a skill?
When talking about “Tutorial Hell”, we can’t forget “Impostor Syndrome”, a syndrome that makes you doubt your own skills. So, people loop on tutorials until they feel “ready”.
<h4>Now, what to do then?</h4>
It may sound obvious, but you need to get off tutorials and start building your own thing.
You’ll encounter all kinds of problems that didn’t occur when you’re following a tutorial. In that way, you’ll understand better about that specific topic.
Don’t doubt your own skill. How are people gonna trust you even yourself doubt your own skills?

No, no we can’t change how many hours does a day has. We can only manage our time nicely and efficiently.
<blockquote>Did you know? The average person spends about 4 hours a day on their phone.</blockquote>
WHAT? Our phone has been a necessity in our life now. We take it everywhere. We use it to text, call somebody, buy food, keep notes, or even maps.
The phone has been evolved from just texting and calling devices to multifunctional devices that we use today.
Yep, but the most time consumed things on our phone is
*let the drums roll*
<blockquote>Social Media</blockquote>
Yep, let it on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube or you say it.
I used to be like that too.
I have this app called Digital Wellbeing on my phone (It’s kind of like ScreenTime on iPhone).
It tracks how many hours you spent on your phone.
When I opened that app, Boom! 6–7 hours average daily.
It’s mindblowing right? But it is what it is.
So I thought of fixing this habit.
I like to watch YouTube videos.
<blockquote>When I eat, I watch YouTube. When I’m bored, I watch YouTube. When I’m learning, I watch YouTube.</blockquote>
See, that is where I spent my 6–7 hours on.
So yeah, I saw a video that talks about Digital Minimalism.
A few minutes into the video, I think this is interesting. And I said to myself, “Well, It doesn’t hurt to try it anyway”.
So I did it.
So this is what I’ve learned Here it is:
<h4>First step. Delete Your Social Media.</h4>
You’re crazy. You must be calling me that now. Chill, chill.
What I meant by that is you delete your social media apps that you think takes too much of your time but don’t give much value to you.
But if you get values on those social media apps, then go ahead and use them. (Like if you make money from there).
BUT If you use those apps and you only waste your time there, then delete it. Delete your Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and even YouTube. (You only can disable your YouTube app though, well it does the same thing so yeah).
The hardest app for me to delete is YouTube. It takes me a lot of will to delete it. (You saw how often I used YouTube earlier, so you can understand right? or maybe not.)
You deleted all those apps. Then what?
<h4>Second Step. Put your essential apps on your home screen. So you can use them more easily.</h4>
(Reduce the friction, you know)
If you are a writer, maybe keep your note-taking app in the front. If you like to travel around, maybe you need your maps app.
You can decide that for yourself. ;)
<h4>Third Step If you can’t control your playing time when playing games. Delete them.</h4>
You’re crazy.
Did you call me crazy twice already?
Man, if you like to play games but you can’t control your playtime. Then your phone usage time will stay the same.
But, but, if you are confident that you can control yourself then it’s up to you to delete it or not.
<h4>Last Step Last but not least, Turn Off Your Phone Notification If it’s not relevant to you to be reached quickly, then turn it off.</h4>
Notification can be so distracting at times.
<h4>Conclusion:</h4>
So yeah, that’s it. Steps to becoming more productive! (Well, if you reduce your phone usage time and then you just stare into the blank space, I don’t think you can call that productive though..)
I applied these steps on my phone. And you know what, I reduced my phone usage time from 6 hours daily to only 2 hours daily.
I’m still trying to not on my phone so much though. But I think It’s good enough already.

Minimalism is essentially living with less, which means you own fewer items. But that doesn’t mean the fewer items you have, you became the most “minimalist” person on earth.
You only possess items that give values to your life, so that doesn’t mean if you like to play guitar but because of this so-called minimalism, you started to ditch the guitar too. (This is wrong!)
<h3>That’s why minimalism consists of two parts.</h3>

<li>Decluttering</li>
<li>Organizing</li>
</ol>
<h3>Let’s talk about decluttering.</h3>
Cluttered space will create a cluttered mind. So, start by decluttering things you don’t use anymore.
Like what Marie Kondo said, don’t keep things that do not spark joy in you.
This also applies to the digital world. Delete your unused apps. Turn off your notifications. Keep your digital workspace clean and minimal.
<h3>Then Organizing.</h3>
After you decluttered your items, then you start by organizing them by categories, like books, clothes, etc.. (or you have your own organizing techniques, it’s up to you)
If you followed these steps, Tada… you will have much cleaner and minimal space to live in.
